The Canada Greener Homes Grant Explained by an Albertan in HVAC

If you’ve been scratching your head about the Canada Greener Homes Grant, you’re not alone. We hear about it from homeowners all the time! Especially when it comes to figuring out which upgrades qualify, how to apply, or whether furnaces, air conditioners, and hot water tanks are included.

The truth? The program can feel confusing, and we don’t blame you. That’s why we’ve put together this (hopefully) easy-to-digest guide for Alberta homeowners. We’re not grant administrators (so you’ll want to check directly with the official site for eligibility and applications), but we are here to make your greener home upgrades straightforward. We might not know everything but we can assure you that we are the experts when it comes to your home HVAC needs.

What is the Canada Greener Homes Grant and How Does it Work?

  • Grant Availability: The Canada Greener Homes Grant is no longer accepting new applications. If you’ve already applied and have an application number in hand, that’s awesome! You can still complete your retrofits and submit your documentation.

  • Grant Amounts: Up to $5,000 for eligible home upgrades, plus up to $600 to help cover pre-EnerGuide evaluation, and post-EnerGuide evaluations.

  • Deadline for Existing Applicants: All retrofits and claims must be completed by December 31, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. ET

  • Loan Option: If your project is bigger, there’s also an interest-free loan of up to $40,000 with a 10-year repayment plan.

Which HVAC Upgrades Qualify?

These are the super important parts for Alberta homeowners who are in the program:

  • Heat Pumps - Eligible and often the biggest ticket item supported.

    • Heat pumps can provide both heating and cooling, which is why they’re considered a greener alternative.

    • You may be able to keep your furnace as a backup, as long as the heat pump can handle your home’s full load.

  • Furnaces & Boilers - These are not covered by the grant, except in northern or off-grid communities. You'll know if you're part of that area.

    • Many Albertans are choosing a furnace and heat pump combination, where the furnace is a backup and the pump does most of the work.

  • Air Conditioning Systems - Standard central AC units are not directly covered.

    • However, a heat pump installation usually doubles as your air conditioner, so you may be able to upgrade your cooling through the program.

  • Other Eligible Retrofits to combine with HVAC upgrades

    • Insulation upgrades (attic, basement, walls).

    • ENERGY STAR-certified windows and doors.

    • Smart thermostats (up to $50 when combined with another retrofit).

    • Solar panels and battery systems.

How to Apply (or Complete Your Existing Application) in Alberta

  1. Confirm that you have already applied and received an application number.

  2. Arrange your pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation.

  3. Perform eligible retrofits, keep your receipts and documentation.

  4. Get a post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation.

  5. Submit your claim via the Greener Homes portal before December 31, 2025.

  6. If approved, you’ll receive your grant funds.

Important to note: New applicants cannot submit applications—only those already accepted before early 2024 can finish their projects and submit paperwork.

While the grant is closed to new applicants, the loan program remains open. We’ve heard that coming soon is the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program, designed for low- to median-income households. Fingers crossed!

Why this is great for Albertans who have registered!

Alberta weather doesn’t mess around. Between -30°C winters and +30°C summers, energy efficiency can make a big difference in your monthly bills.

  • A smart thermostat paired with your furnace makes your home easier to control year-round. Having this grant or no grant, is super helpful.

  • A high-efficiency HVAC solution keeps energy bills predictable.

  • A heat pump could cut down heating costs while doubling as your cooling system.

And while furnaces and traditional ACs aren’t directly covered by the grant, these upgrades often tie into other efficiency retrofits, meaning you can bundle projects in a way that saves money and energy.

FAQ: Canada Greener Homes & HVAC

Q: Can I still apply for the Canada Greener Homes Grant?

A: No, new applications are closed (since early 2024). But if you already applied and have an application number, you can still complete your retrofits and claim your funding. Just be sure to do so before December 31, 2025 (11:59 p.m. ET)

Q: Can I use the grant to replace my furnace?

A: No, unless you live in a northern/off-grid community. Most homeowners combine a furnace with a heat pump instead.

Q: Is central air conditioning covered?

A: Not directly, but a qualifying heat pump provides AC functionality.

Q: Are hot water tanks included?

A: Standard tanks aren’t, but heat pump water heaters may be.

Q: What’s the deadline for funding?

A: December 31, 2025, for completing and submitting approved projects.

Q: Who do I contact for applications?

A: Reach out to the Canada Greener Homes office or visit the official federal website.

Q: Which upgrades are not part of the grant?

A: So there’s no confusion:

  • Standard furnaces, boilers, and air conditioners are not grant-eligible (except in northern cases, check to see what areas are “northern”).

  • Standard hot water tanks are not eligible.

  • Only heat pump technology (for space or water heating) gets covered under HVAC.
